The Laws of Duplicate Bridge changed in August for the first time in 10 years. We will put significant changes on this page over the next few months.

Tip of the Month for October:

Insufficient Bids  Many people are unaware that an insufficient bid may be accepted by the         next player (LHO). If this happens, the bidding proceeds with no penalty. If LHO chooses         not to accept the bid, the offender must make the bid good or his partner will have to pass         for the rest of the Auction. However the detail of making the bid good is complex, so you             should always call the Director before attempting to correct an insufficient bid.

Tips of the Month for September:

  1. Players are now allowed to point out that a completed trick card is pointing the wrong way. Declarer can do it at any time; dummy or defenders can do it only until the lead is made to the following trick.
  2. When you put the dummy down you must display it with the lowest ranking cards nearer declarer. (Seems obvious, but it is one of the Laws).
Tip of the Month for August

In the event of a possible revoke:

  1. Dummy may ask Declarer whether he has a card of that suit, but may not ask Defenders.
  2. Declarer may ask Defenders, and Defenders may ask Declarer.
  3. Defenders may ask each other whether they have revoked. (This was not legal up to this year).

In the event of a revoke, always call the Director for a ruling.

Tip of the Month for July

When a board is to be played, it should remain in the centre of the table until play is complete. This allows players to see the Vulnerability during play, and helps to avoid card mixups producing 12 - 14 hands. After play, hands should be shuffled before replacing them in the board.
